Justifying Bieber

Earlier today I saw a local infotainment show on television, and instead of talking about celebrity gossip it was all about Justin Bieber. Well it's a good thing that at last I didn't have to see those unimportant local celebrity news (ie someone showing off his/ her new ride, new house, new boyfriend/ girlfriend, diet tips, etc). It talked about the Justin Bieber phenomenon that has strucked the whole world, including Indonesia.

Yes, Justin has been scheduled to visit Indonesia this April. And as you can imagine, the tweenagers (I got this from international gossip websites—it refers to female teenagers, and I'll make it short into simply 'tweens') are all excited to see Justin and enthusiastically standing in the queue for tickets. From the television footage, I saw a bunch of girls holding and kissing their tickets ecstatically with big smile on their faces.

Of course I'm going to do so when I get my meet-and-greet-with-Shia-LaBeouf ticket one day. It's a pretty normal reaction. But as usual, there are people who still questioning the importance and greatness of this Canadian kid. How could he be so famous? How could the girls got dazzled by his fair-but-relatively-ordinary presence? How could he win American Music Awards while there are kids whose voice much better than his?

I know those people questioning him aren't actually jealous, they are just simply wondering because they haven't found the right answer. Wait, I'm not defending the Biebs, but they don't have to be that harsh if they tried to analyze this phenomenon in ease. Come on, Justin and his fans, they're just kids. I'm pretty sure if Justin was asked about how could he be this way he'd answer he had no idea.

Here's my view. I'm trying to digest this Justin euphoria in a lighter way. First, I admit he has a really nice voice. It's plain, but people will quickly acquaint his voice. Usher won't endorse him for no reason, right? Even though David Archuleta, or even Greyson Chance has a better one. Second, he has a decent look. Clean cut, casual, and nice to look at. I'm so jealous of his hair, it looks soft and real smooth! Third, his songs are inevitably catchy, easy to memorize. They have nice tune and teenager-ish delightful lyrics. Thus I can't really blame him if "Baby" has become a 'national anthem' in a few shops.

Those three factors above are adequate for singers who are likely prone to be a 'one hit wonder'. They can be famous and explosive at the moment, but they'll be easily forgotten whenever a new talent rises. They can steal the tweens' heart, but not the critics. They are made simply to entertain, not to deliver nor represent something substantial—they are hardly the picture of legends. But this Bieber kid could prove that he isn't just the-next-entertainer, he won the AMAs and is nominated for Grammys. What the hell?!

I don't know about how the jury of AMA and Grammys valuate their nominees and winners. Is it solely about the quality? Well, if it is then I don't think Justin wouldn't have any chance. His voice, music, and lyrics are all fun, but not of substance. It also goes to Taylor Swift, OK we all know she wrote and arranged her songs by herself, but seriously most of her songs are about girl falls with a boy, girl likes a boy secretly, girl broken hearted with a boy, and something like that. Maybe they are more appreciated because of their young age. And I can't give any examples of who created a really good music in young age so I won't talk about this any further. (For those who have the answer please kindly inform me, but I don't want Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Jonas Brothers for the answers).

Is it about the likability? Or the commercial success? This would be reasonable because Justin has sold millions of his album. He peaked the Billboard and other international charts. His songs became the most requested in any radio in the world. But I don't think this will be a primary verdict for the jury to pick eligible winners (the late Michael Jackson will be furious from the heaven of music). Bottomline, about how Justin could win these prestigious music awards is still a mystery. Only God knows why. Really. I don't even understand why this kid is apparently taken very seriously by the industry.

Overall, as a thoughtful and more mature person than him, we'd better just let him enjoy his moment. We don't have to be angry at his current success (albeit it's quite illogical, from my explanation above), there are people who care so much about this industry and they do actually know of who's the real deal and not. The musical world is still on its way in finding the next Michael Jackson, the next The Beatles, the next John Lennon, the next Mariah Carey, the next Led Zeppelin. Through its process, I think it's better if we just enjoy it!
